The film presents us with different personalities that always find a certain interface in the course of the movie. Due to the complexity and diversity of the characters, I will limit the focus to the two main characters in the Generation section.

The movie begins with Gloria, a 10-year-old girl who lives with her mother in Brazil. Gloria’s mother works as a nurse in a hospital. Gloria often has to spend her time there after school and is popular with the older patients there, for whom she likes to lend a sympathetic ear.
The other child is Sofia. She is the same age as Gloria. The two meet at the hospital, where Sofia has arrived with her grandmother, who has obviously had a fall and is also suffering from senile dementia. So that Sofia doesn’t have to stay alone while the older woman receives medical care, Gloria’s mother asks her to look after the strange girl. The two children couldn’t be more different, but something connects them and a friendship quickly develops in which they share their very own worlds, each with their own set of feelings.

The two friends Gloria and Sofia

Gloria shows her new friend a long scar on her breast and explains in her childlike way that she has received a donor heart. But it obviously feels strange to her. She repeatedly examines the scar and scratches it. On the other hand, she has no problem rummaging through the boxes of other people’s things that are stored in the hospital with Sofia. Gloria also reports that, since the operation on her heart, she keeps seeing things that others don’t get to see.
Sofia, on the other hand, is struggling with her past and presumably also with her mother. She tears up a photo of a boy and, in the presence of Gloria, talks about a lost brother who has not died. Nevertheless, it is her innermost wish that her supposed brother be bid farewell at a ceremony (in accordance with Brazilian culture). The only one who supports this is her grandmother.
The bond that develops between the two girls ultimately brings the two mothers together and Gloria’s mother offers to help with her grandmother’s care at home, which Gloria’s mother gratefully accepts. With this support, the grandmother can leave the hospital to be back in her familiar surroundings and spend the last days of her life in peace, a fact that the woman is well aware of. The old lady also has some helpful advice for Gloria and Sofia is also given the opportunity to come to terms with her past.
